Poem taken down on the inside of a Lean Cuisine box

Mornings in July start slowly—and early, because of the heat.
Coffee and a heaping bowl of granola—with kiwi fruit,
Mango, grapes, Greek yogurt, and skim milk—and one
Or two Sudokus speedily done arouse my brain,

And sometimes, if I'm lucky, worded thoughts begin to flow,
And sometimes flow so fast and full I despair to know
How I can remember them until chores are done
And computer on. The recycle basket yields a scrap to pen on.

  1. Enjoyed your morning poem but wonder doesn’t the consumption of “yogurt” and “skim milk” contribute to the inhumane treatment of dairy cows who are artificially inseminated at 13 months and after 9 months gestation have their offspring removed from their care within 3 days of birth so that they can spend the rest of their short lives in an endless circle as slaves to the milking machine until they develop diseases common to milk cows such as mastitis after which they become part of the US beef supply, 19% of which are cull dairy cows?

    1. Jim, upon reading your comment, I felt so embarrassed and in-the-wrong, it's hard to say "thanks" for it, but I do thank you. As you know, I've found justification for occasionally eating animal flesh even though I'm on record opposing it on moral grounds.
My investment in consuming animal products is such that I've not gone on record opposing it also. As your graphic example makes clear, if eating animal flesh contributes to the inhumane treatment of animals, then so equally does eating eggs and yogurt and drinking milk. I have been in the wrong for not opposing that practice also.
What I'm thanking you for, then, is for prompting me to get my moral house in order. I am beholden to you.
And I assume that you didn't write the example just for the sake of schooling me, but also because you too don't want to contribute to the inhumane treatment of cows (in addition to wanting to avoid the health risks of eating dairy products)?

  2. Way to go Jim! Nice to see someone else on this blog show some backing for the vegan banner.

  3. Yes he does! One can't argue with cold, hard facts.
