Todd’s only duty ever seemed to be to check carts on their way out, and Goines couldn’t say how many times he had heard Todd say “Have a won-der-ful day!” It had to have been dozens.
So, on the Goineses’ own way out 30 minutes later, Goines was working on a statement of appreciation to deliver to Todd.
Todd briefly inspected the Goines’ cart, purple-penned their receipt, and intoned, “Have a won-der-ful day!”
Goines was ready. “Thank you, Todd! I am delighted to report that, largely because of you, I have had a long succession of most wonderful days indeed, and I want to thank you and pay tribute to you for your powerful connection with the—” (Goines hesitated, trying to think of a substitute for “God”) “the ultimate power!”
Todd said – Goines thought he heard, for Todd was already behind him, already counting the items in the next shopper‘s cart – “Thank you, sir, have a most won-der-ful day!”
