But he hadn’t been inspired to open a single one of them for weeks. It was the one titled “Feet, what do I need you for when...” that decided him to check them out – possibly, he guessed, because the worsening numbness and lack of feeling in his right leg, especially in his right foot, had finally driven him to make an appointment with a doctor.
So, he clicked on “Feet, what do I need you for when...,” only to find that the entire quote was “Feet, what do I need you for when I have wings to fly?” It was attributed to Frida Kahlo, but however inspiring that artist’s life might have been – or however inspiring Salma Hayek’s movie portrayal of Frida had been – the metaphor didn’t inspire Goines much.
But wait...wasn’t Frida Kahlo crippled? Goines looked it up. Indeed, she had polio as a child and spinal and pelvis damage from a car accident. Surely he remembered that, somewhere down in his subconscious. He’d seen the movie, after all.
Come on Goines, Goines said to himself, listen to the fluttering of those wings!
