Why can so many men eat the same as their wives but not gain weight? Is it their metabolism? Women’s hormones? –Kathleen
First, this is absolutely a fact, and it sucks. And the answer to both of the following sub-questions is also, yup.
I am not qualified, nor inclined to give you lots of science. So, we’ll stick with the simple stuff, and a few gross generalizations.
Men’s metabolism is different because they tend to have a higher percentage of muscle AND a lower percentage of fat than women. Muscle burns calories (much faster than fat) = faster metabolism.
So, what to do? Ya fiddle with the basics of Mom Nature at your peril. So don’t try to mess with your hormones. You can, however, improve your metabolic rate by ensuring that you:
- Find the ways and times to do the recommended “I can barely hold a conversation” aerobic minutes each week. (I love zumba and long walks.)
- And ensure that you are getting weight workouts three times a week. (I’m getting two…now working on adding in the third.) You need to build and maintain your muscle mass so it will consume all those yummy calories. There are a zillion ways to do this. Ask more questions if you need direction.
[We would really like more questions to answer, so send ’em in….]
