Thor's Day: Rest for the weary

David Hayward goes by "the naked pastor"
Wake up! This isn't church!

[Editor's Note: Sleeping during sermons must be a common occurrence, it's the subject of many jokes involving church. But a good proportion of church-goers are sleep-deprived people who'd do better to just sleep in on Sundays.]

My two-year-old daughter, Paige, was with her mother while her older sister was being examined by a dentist.
Paige kept herself busy playing with toys in the waiting room until she noticed that her mom was resting, her eyes closed.
With about six other patients waiting, Paige marched up to her mother, looked her in the eye and shook her shoulder.
"Mommy," she yelled, "wake up! This isn't church!"
My wife awoke from her doze to find the other patients barely able to suppress their laughter.

"I hope you didn't take it personally, Pastor," an embarrassed woman said after a church service, "when my husband walked out during your sermon."
"I did find it rather disconcerting," the minister replied.
"It wasn't out of any disrespect to you," insisted the church-goer. "Ralph has been walking in his sleep ever since he was a child."

    2. I don't view religion and church as hilarious or scary. I was just commenting on the humor. (smile)

    1. Of course, you're right: Religion and church are very scary also. Maybe we laugh to make the situation easier on ourselves.

  3. Indifference to church and religion is an excellent stance—if that's what you meant....

  4. Your thoughts not mine. If folks get comfort in their belief in religion good for them. If they are comfortable without it, as you are, good for you and them also.

    1. Sounds more like disinterest, also a fine stance. Thanks for clarifying.
But do you have any sympathy for young people whose minds and spirits are saddled by their parents' suffocating, authoritarian, Bible-quoting regimes? Or for innocents who are murdered by zealots acting under the delusion that their vengeful god requires it of them?
You don't need to answer that. Let's just say...I'm just saying....
