A day in Hahndorf

By Vic Midyett

Toward the end of June, Shirley & I took a day trip from Strathalbyn, South Australia to Hahndorf, the oldest German-settled town on the continent, they say, and completely dependent on tourism.
Hahndorf has some awesome art galleries, which Shirley drooled over. We went from one to the other, passing a huge number of cafes and restaurants, all serving German food. Everything is on one very long street.

For lunch we chose the only restaurant that served what Shirley wanted, a Reuben sandwich – a beef-sauerkraut-Swiss cheese Reuben, to be exact. And I had a chili Kranski sausage.

I loved this last building – an ice cream store!

Countryside around Hahndorf – cows on hill

Hahndorf is at a little higher elevation than Strathalbyn, and it's colder and more rainy there. The day we were there was a little overcast and cool, but we had fun.

You can find a bit of additional information about Hahndorf from the South Australia website, from Wikipedia (for example:
Hahndorf is accessible from Adelaide, the South Australian capital, via the South Eastern Freeway. The town was settled by Lutheran migrants largely from in and around a small village then named Kay in Prussia, many of whom were aboard the Zebra arriving on 28 December 1838),
and from Hahndorf's own website (for example:
The most striking features that greet visitors are the over-100-year-old elm and plane trees that line the main street and the original "Fachwerk" buildings, many beautifully maintained or restored to original conditions. The Adelaide Hills produce some of the finest cold-climate wines world-wide. There are several wineries and cellar doors located at some of the most beautiful locations in or near Hahndorf offering wines and delicious meals prepared using the finest local ingredients).

  1. Thanks to the Midyetts' report, we now know of a pleasant little town to visit near the south coast of Australia. And from Vic's photos, we can tell it's pleasant on the eye as well. Thank you, Vic and Shirley!
