A Technological Assault on the Human Brain

Five decades ago I read a book with the title As A Man Thinketh. The phrase that stood out for me was, “As a man (woman) thinketh in his (her) heart so is he (she)”. The concept in the statement is that your dominant thoughts tend to reveal where your life is going. What you focus on will demonstrate your purpose in life. There is a lot of truth to this principle. Today our focus is so inextricably linked to technology that there are disturbing new developments in what is happening to our brains.

His article “Every Day Is A Gift When You Are Over 100” was featured at the time in National Geographic Magazine. Dr Leaf attempted to discover what was the secret to longevity in these communities.

On Sunday, September 23, Tiger Woods produced a remarkable achievement. He won his first golf tournament in over five years, beating out the top golfers in the world. What makes the victory remarkable was that in 2017, it looked like his golfing career was over.

Socrates said: “Whatever authority I may have rested solely on knowing how little I know.” The statement reflected the fact that he had contempt for the knowledge displayed by authorities. He recognised 2,500 years ago that mindless subservience to authority did not serve people well. It appears that Socrates detected a lack of critical thinking on the part of many individuals. Fast forward to today, and we have to acknowledge that many are devoid of logic.
