Does Bush's War increase the terror threat? [yes]

I recommend yesterday's post on Barry Eisler's blog: The Heart of the Matter: Iraq War Increases Terror Threat, in which he says that the recent National Intelligence Estimate is right: "...if we maintain our current approach in Iraq, Islamic radicalism will continue to benefit. We must therefore change our approach."

And, in today's article "The Cost Of Conservatism In Iraq," at TomPaine.com, Robert L. Borosage writes: "The intelligence agencies have now officially acknowledged the inescapable reality: The failed occupation in Iraq has stoked the global terrorist threat, generating recruits for increasing acts of terror across the globe. That conclusion is in the latest classified National Intelligence Estimate on Iraq, portions of which were leaked to the media this past weekend."

  1. I think that anyone who doesn't believe the war increases the terror threat is wearing blinders. The war engenders animosity toward America, and the animosity spikes an increase, not a decrease, in the likelihood of terrorist attacks.

  2. Mr. Eisler doesn't seem to be one of the people wearing blinders, but there are a lot of them. People are able to believe what they want to believe, regardless of the facts.

I've just revised the post and added a paragraph pointing to more information about the National Intelligence Estimate.

  3. Nope, no blinders on Eisler. I think the ones wearing the thickest blinders are the Washington insiders, from Dubya on down. They're going to justify that war at any cost because it's politically expedient to do so. To admit any qualms about it would cause some loss of face. It'll be interesting to see whose perspective changes when the Administration changes.
