Thunder Down Under: Sunflower

“Sunflower” (detail)
Painting by Shirley Deane/Midyett

Text by Vic Midyett

A friend gave us some sunflower seeds that she had had for years. No one thought they would grow, but out of the entire packet, one did. Shirley painted “Sunflower” just for this friend:
“Sunflower” (15" x 20")
The sunflower is in stark contrast to the concrete-block wall behind it. A couple of white blooms locals call “honeysuckle” hover over the sunflower from above.
Shirley took the painting with her to coffee with the friend the next day, who had no idea she was going to be given a painting, and she loves it! It will be hers now – and, through the photograph posted here, ours too.
