Eleven Years Ago Today: [Three light verses]

By Moristotle

[Originally published on Thursday, November 16, 2006, under the title, “In preparation for Serena Joy’s memoriam (and Southern Writer’s).” We have added an image, deleted the footnotes, revised the last line of the second limerick, and added the third limerick, which was contributed as a comment at the time. We also tried to contact the two good ladies memorialized, but so far have heard from neither. In 2006, the first lady’s blog may have been called “Miss Begotten,” and nowadays the second lady does her blogging on Google+.]

Serena wants to be ready when she croaks, doggone it!
She asked me for an obit and I’m here to say I’m on it.
“A limerick,” she said, “should do,”
And maybe, in fact, ’twould do.
But, damn! I’m sure you know: Serena deserves a sonnet.

Image accompanying Miss Begotten’s statement

That said, for Southern Writer I could say the same,
Whose dedication to the art that bears her name
    Often compelled her to write
Far into, or through, the night,
Working hard and long to dodge the muse’s blame.

You’ve done a fine job, Moristotle, by golly!
You ought to be pleased, maybe even jolly.
    You put some rhymes together,
    And now I wonder whether
You’ll do something seasonal, with holly.

  1. Wow, this is a blast from the past! I have no idea where the past 11 years have gone, or why I'm still kicking.:) Thanks for the fun shout-out.

    1. Serena, so glad you haven't croaked! You know, in revisiting this post of eleven years ago (then just a few months after I started blogging), I discovered that you, too, had only just started.
Have you now stopped? Your blog – currently named "Parenthetically Speaking"? – was last posted to on August 26, 2015.
And, in 2006, was your blog, in fact, called "Miss Begotten"? Its URL is still "missbegotten.blogspot.com." (Mine's URL is still "moristotle.blogspot.com," even though it has been named "Moristotle & Co." since, I think, 2012.
