Ask Wednesday: Ask Susan

About being occupied with celebrities

By Susan C. Price

[Questions are followed by answers and then, inevitably by ADVICE...you DID expect that...didn’t you?]

Why do people have to be so occupied with celebrities? –Deborah

Yeah, funny, right? And a relatively recent phenomenon from my generational perspective.
It just seems to be one of those things that happen in a culture...Connecting talented and totally untalented, but “famous” creatures with constant pictorial and internet-communicated coverage.
I daresay the “tulip mania” of the 1600s was no more or less sane. If you are unfamiliar with this “fashion/passion,” please consult Wikipedia.

One could make a comment about the low intelligence level of those following all this “non-news”...but then...one would have to fail to admit to some fascination....
And, have you ever found your brain going, “Well, she is an intelligent actress and devoted to causes I believe in, so it’s ok for me to want to see HER house…as I will no doubt find her taste (or that of the interior designer she can afford) inspiring?”

Advice? Nah, just enjoy or ignore. And wait for the fascination to fade.

[We would really like more questions to answer, so send ’em in….]

  2. Poor child. Thinks the way to success involves a public action with a foam hand, the twerking doesn't bother me!! What i find so sad, is that she cant dance.

  3. Nor can Miley sing. At least looking at her is not so bad compared to having to listen.

If one considers the popularity of Lord Byron in his day, the modern swoon over stars seems nothing new.
