Overthinking

By Blake Adamson

My mind races ahead
Questions, questions, questions
My mind races ahead
Tomorrow’s too soon, but too far away
My mind races ahead
Winding up my back, and tightening holds
My mind races ahead
Crying would be nice, but my eyes are dry

My mind races ahead
The problems pile up, with unread books and unchecked lists
My mind races ahead
Worry nests in my chest, scratches down my throat
My mind races ahead
Just below my heart, there’s a dark and dense spot
My mind races ahead
The knots in my stomach coil, hiss and block the way
My mind races ahead
It’s hard to breathe, it’s hard to think
My mind races ahead
Pills meant to help don’t, sleep doesn’t come
My mind races ahead
All it takes is a little bad news, a little change of plans
My mind races ahead
The happy thoughts vacate, and peace of mind’s in pieces
My mind races ahead
I need a way to vent, I need a way to settle
My mind races ahead
I pull out a blank sheet, and hope relief comes
My mind races ahead
I type the first line, with words that run and rerun
My mind races ahead

  1. I enjoyed the energy of the poem and I really liked the way you structured it.

  2. Yes, energy! I felt it too, but hadn’t found that word to label it. I think the steady repetition of the short line ending in “races ahead“ sets the pace, guns the drive forward. The poem portrays the “mind” of its “I” as having a volition of its own, and the energy belongs to it, and “I” seems to seek how to control it, how to use it, how to master it.
