All Over the Place:
A Hike along the Near Forty

By Michael H. Brownstein

Purple loose leaf in loud clumps of morning glory
and every-yellows dripping with sunshine,
brown recluses covering the bark of the blackened birch,
paper wasp bark and monkey breath Anne’s lace:

oranges and blues and reds and whites,
milk and sour cream and cheese green icicles,
popcorn and mango and chom chom and quinoa,
matzos and breastfruit and sour sop and a leek of oil:

fresh pressed bark and glossy leaf papers the groundswell,
large small seeds crunch open through movement and pause,
rhythm and a litter of light, song and a texture of silver tails,
the sweet waft of honey and sorghum, fresh yeast and meat.

  1. I really love this poem. I think it may be in the company of my favorite two or three other Michael H. Brownstein poems. I realize that I just more or less assigned myself the task of identifying the other two or three.

  2. Love the details you included in your hike! Many of the words have such great sounds to go with the images. Another great MHB piece!
