The temperature this morning is the coldest it has been to date this autumn at 33˚F, just one degree above freezing for my Aussie friends.
The grass is covered in a white sheet of frost, but thankfully there is no wind or even a breeze to speak of. The best part is there are no clouds and the sun is beaming brightly.
However, I have been observing hundreds of thousands of leaves drifting gently off the trees and falling to the yard in a cascade of beauty and death, finally ready and willing to offer themselves to the earth. But you see it is not “death” but a continuum of sustenance and life to mother earth for her continued growth.
I am thinking to myself that the tree is saying, “Ok y’all, off you go so I can survive and brave the winter that is coming. We have done very well together creating shade and home for many nests of birds all summer, and now we must both let go because I must rest and gather my love and strength for the upcoming spring.”
I imagine I hear the falling leaves saying, “Bless you, mother, for your wisdom and for feeding us our entire lives and helping us to shelter so many of God’s creatures. Our job is also complete.”
Whether we have a spiritual belief system or not, we all leave seeds of thought, questions, actions, and behaviors with everyone we know and meet throughout our lives.
Life is both bitter and sweet. A time of holding onto and a time of letting go, yet ALWAYS blanketed in LOVE.

Wet here and cold front coming tonight. Must be the one that is at you now. Have a Happy Thanksgiving, Vic. Sweet story by the way.
ReplyDeleteWhile our nights are cold (sometimes below 30) on the Front Range of Colorado, we've now had NO measurable snow for over 215 consecutive days and are out to break a record. This is NOT a good thing..the entire state is now in a drought. Ironically, our fall colors and the piles of leaves were more beautiful than I remember. Penny
