Ask Wednesday: When do you applaud a musical performance?

Let's chart it

By Anonymous

It depends on whether you know how the piece ends, what other people are doing, and how daring you are.

When listening to music on the radio, it is acceptable to applaud at any time.

  2. Should we maybe identify some other alternatives to just listening (besides dancing) and put it up to a popular vote? I think we should stipulate that nominees must exclude activities for which the music would serve only as background. E.g., these would be excluded: ascending or descending an elevator, reading a book, balancing a checkbook, completing an income-tax return, and having sex, Hmm, I wonder whether there are any alternatives to just-listening and dancing. Would meditating avoid the background stipulation? Writing a poem?
