Three paintings from the imagination of Shirley Deane/Midyett

“Boat on Lake” (detail)
Two boats & a flower

By Vic Midyett

Shirley painted “White Hibiscus” and “Boat on Lake” in December, both from her imagination:

“Boat on Lake” (6" x 8")

“White Hibiscus” (6" x 6")

My editor commented that “their colors are especially fetching, they remind me of Renoir," and asked me to encourage Shirley to paint more just from her imagination.
Unfortunately for me, she gave “Boat on Lake” to someone (other than me) as a Christmas gift. But, fortunately for me, she was willing to paint another one, which I title “Boat at Sunset”:

“Boat at Sunset” (8" x 10")

“Boat at Sunset” (detail)

Having photographs of both boat paintings gives us a chance to compare the same scene in different moods, or emotions. About emotion, my editor commented:
For representations of nature, it’s hard or impossible to beat a photograph. But emotion is another thing, which a gifted painter can often do better than a gifted photographer. Most of Jake’s paintings affect me emotionally.
I guess there’s no irony (none is intended anyway) in the fact that here we are looking at photographs (or digital images of the photographs?) of paintings and not literally at the paintings....
