Mary’s Voice: Posthumously Speaking 13

Detail “San Simeon Lighthouse”
San Simeon Lighthouse
& Cabin in the Mountains

By Mary Alice Condley (1925-2007)

[Editor’s Note: We are grateful to Maryjo Williams for sharing two more paintings by my sister Mary Alice Condley. Maryjo is the daughter of Chloe, a sister of Mary’s husband, Elbert O. Condley.
[Maryjo (or Mary Jo) was named after Mary and lived for a time with Mary and Elbert as a child. Years later, when she was visiting Mary and admired her paintings, Mary told Maryjo she could have whichever one she wanted.
“San Simeon Lighthouse” (12" x 16")
[“When I saw ‘San Simeon Lighthouse,’ I was hooked. That was a favorite spot for us both. She & Eb visited there whenever they went to the coast. I camped out there often in my 30s & 40s and slept there on the beach.”
[The second painting belongs to Maryjo’s sister Mae McKay, who kindly sent Maryjo a photograph of it:

“Cabin in the Mountains” (16" x 20")
[“Mary gave it to Mae the last time she & Eb came to Arkansas. Mary told her, ‘I brought you this if you want it.’ Mae was extremely glad. Uncle Elbert made the frame.”]

  1. It was a delight to get to know Maryjo Williams through our correspondence about today’s post. I hope the posting will reach others (maybe other cousins of Mary & Elbert’s children) who might have received one or more of Mary’s paintings. We would love to give Mary many more opportunities to “speak posthumously” through her paintings.
