Goines On: Happy his birthday

On his 79th birthday, Goines discovered something amazing: He enjoyed more happiness saying “Happy My Birthday” to other people than he derived from hearing them say “Happy Birthday” to him or from receiving their birthday cards – not that their saying “Happy Birthday” to him or sending him a birthday card was not enjoyable; it was.
The discovery may have been set up by his realizing earlier that morning how much he enjoyed his wife’s laughter. Still in their bedroom, he had heard her laughter coming from the dining room. She must have been reading or viewing something, maybe looking at the latest photos of their granddaughter. He’d soon find out. (She had been viewing a 1996 video of a man providing “child day care” for a Panda cub after sensing that the cub’s mother was requesting his assistance so she could go on an errand.)
And then, later, when Mrs. Goines said she was going out to the garage to ride her bicycle – it was 25° outside, too cold for a walk – he had deliberately beamed her a smile, which she returned, signaling to him – proving, he now felt – that his smiles – his laughter? – helped her feel good too. And helping her feel good helped him feel good.
Saying “Happy My Birthday” to others helped him have a happy birthday.
