Tuesday Voice: Roo Bars

How to kangaroo-proof your car

By Vic Midyett

Something I've never thought to explain to my wider audience is that you don't drive at night anywhere in Australia, except in cities. YOU JUST DON"T. There are more kangaroos in the country than there are people. The chance of hitting one with your car is high.
Big trucks with large protective bars on the front do not slow down. I've seen the evidence of this many times with carcasses lying all over the road.

Truck drivers use 5- to 6-inch diameter pipe, quite often filled with water, for, 1, personal survival and, 2, extra water for their radiator or just to wash their hands.
I have "roo bars" on my Nisson Patrol too, as do most four-wheel drives and some sedans. It is not a foolproof system of protection for your vehicle, but it helps. Without the bars, a direct hit could result in your radiator being out of commission, and you being stuck in the middle of nowhere.

The smart driver is always off the road by dark.
