Devolution (lyrics for a song)

With apologies
to the Beatles*

By Paul Clark (aka motomynd)

You say you want devolution
Well, you know
Everybody seems to want to ruin the world
You tell me that it’s devolution
Well, you know
Everybody seems to want to ruin the world

When you talk about destruction
Don’t you know that you can count everybody in

Don’t you know it’s never again gonna be
All right?
Don’t you know it’s never again gonna be (all right)
Don’t you know it’s never again gonna be (all right)

You say you got no real solution
Well, you know
We all hate that no one’s got a plan
You ask me for a contribution
Well, you know
We’re all doing as little as we can

But if you want money for people with minds that hate
All I can tell you is brother it’s never too late

Don’t you know it’s never gonna be (all right)
Don’t you know it’s never gonna be (all right)
Don’t you know it’s never gonna be (all right)

You say you’ll change the constitution
Well, you know
We all fear what the judge has in his head
You tell me it’s the institution
Well, you know
You can always move to Canada instead

Now if you go carrying pictures of Chairman Xi
You’ll make it with everyone who thinks only they should be free

Don’t you know it’s never gonna be (all right)
Don’t you know it’s never gonna be (all right)
Don’t you know it’s never gonna be (all right)

All, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, all, never all right
All right, all right, all right, all right, never gonna be all right

  1. Paul, thanks for sharing the results of one of your recent brain warm-up exercises. I recommend another Beatles song for another occasion, perhaps for a later birthday than one’s 64th? From the Sgt. Pepper album.

    1. On reflection, and after unconsciously comparing the “64” song with “Revolutions” and seeing how far much better the latter is than “64,” I must apologize for suggesting “64” for a brain warm-up. Plus, I remembered you telling me that you consider “Back in the USSR” the greatest Beatles song ever, and the “only TRULY GREAT Beatles song: very clever lyrics plus a driving rhythm.” I believe you even said you would rather listen to it 100 times on repeat than listen to 100 of their other songs once. I bow to your keener musical insight.

  2. Excellent. Non-partisan, current, relevant, accurate. Could be the basis for a master's thesis.
