Fish for Friday

You may remember I mentioned a climber acquaintance who died way too young due to a fluke avalanche in a "safe" area. Here is an interesting quick read about him: "Historical Badass: Alpinist Alex Lowe," which includes the statement, "Often named in magazines and by his peers as the best climber in the world, he had shrugged off the unwanted label with typical diffidence, responding: 'The best climber is the one having the most fun.'”

Just finished reading a biography of Cezanne, then found this wonderful audio slideshow in The Guardian today.

CNN's Wolf Blitzer again makes a fool of himself:

Hope you're seeing better. I was very sorry to read about your new issues with vision, but I remain impressed with your ability to transcend the ones that hit you years ago; and also by your fortitude in talking about it.

No captions needed. [? Do you agree? How would you caption these two photos?]

There doesn't seem to be a way to discourage the growing middle class in Asian societies from clamoring for status-symbol ivory figurines made from the tusks of illegally killed elephants, but there may be a way to dissuade elephant poaching: let the elephants handle it. Elephants long ago learned to be wary of dealing with humans, but as illegal hunting puts more pressure on them they are also learning to defend themselves, as a poacher in Zimbabwe recently discovered: "Elephant Kills His Poacher and People Aren’t Exactly Sad."

You say you don't want to support billionaire industrialists who back political causes you disagree with, or corporations that add unhealthy elements to the food you eat or the air you breathe, but you just can't find the time to do the research to find out who is behind the products you buy? Now you don't have to, thanks to the "Buycott" app: "New App Lets You Boycott Koch Brothers, Monsanto and More by Scanning Your Shopping Cart." Perhaps the best news about this app is the developer is struggling to make necessary refinements since it has been overwhelmed thanks to its popularity.

When the horrific Sandy Hook elementary school massacre capped a string of recent mass shootings, most people assumed restrictions on gun sales and ownership would quickly follow. News programs and talk shows were abuzz about impending measures which would curb the clout and income of the NRA and firearms manufacturers alike. Nearly a half year later, that outcome has not only failed to materialize, but in some notable cases the results have been the exact opposite of what was expected: "How the Obama Gun Boom Pushed the Fortune of Two Brothers to $1.2 Billion."

Every so often something shows up that seems so stupid at first, until you start paying attention to what they are really doing and then you go WOW, what talent to do this! Hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Take the time to see this through. It's just phenomenal.

"Religion is like a penis" is early leader for quote of the year.

I'll have to remember to be careful what I write to you bc it may end up on your blog. :)

Limerick of the Week:
Don't hold back on what you write me.
I'll be discreet in how I cite thee;
    Just indiscreet enough
    To preserve the good stuff,
But not so indiscreet as to bite thee.

  1. While I found the whole bowl interesting. Chuck's story of his climbing friend brought home the memory of men I looked on as great. Most seem to leave before their time.

    1. Ed, interesting that you thought that story came from Chuck. Chuck, did you know Lowe?

  2. Not from me. I once met Lowe at Laguna Paron, Peru, where he was soloing a gigantic ice wall on Nevado Huandoy. Way out of my league.

    1. One should never assume. Sorry Chuck, but you had mentioned losing friends when we were talking about adventures and I jumped right on that bait Morris threw out there. He sounds like he was out of everybody's league. I feel humbled, by Morris and Lowe.
