Ask Wednesday: Ask Susan

About the most important thing to leave behind

By Susan C. Price

[Questions are followed by answers and then, inevitably by ADVICE...you DID expect that...didn’t you?]

What's the most important thing to leave behind at the end of life? –Claire

It’s best to assume you are leaving EVERYTHING behind. My advice is to plan to die on the day you spend or give away your last penny.

It is nice to leave good feelings behind for those who might remember you. To make that happen, you need to ALWAYS behave about 110% nicer than you can imagine, to everyone, all the time. Yes, really, Alllllll the time.
Being a good parent and/or teacher leaves some very nice stuff behind.
Many folks are very happy to have liquid assets left to THEM...but...if you leave some to those who YOU think of...annnnnnd there are others who thought they should get some or should have gotten more...you see where this is going, right? Or you don't make it PERFECTLY CLEAR how the final money/assets are to be handled, and leave some poor schmuck with the job of cleaning up your affairs, or leave people to act their worst selves in trying to decide who gets what...well that's not nice.
Work to NOT leave a mess: not a messy house, nor messy documents, nor messy feelings, nor messy fiscal affairs. Clean as you go. As you know, you don't get to choose when you go.

[We would really like more questions to answer, so send ’em in….]

Red Shoes Journal
Tis the season of giving. Well, I think it's good to give whenever the mood strikes. And if your mood is about to strike for gifts for those you love, those you like, those you want to thank...or for yourself. Consider saving driving time and gas and check out the useful items featuring my art work in my "virtual store" (cafepress.com/susansart6).
  • If you see an item you want, but it has not got the design you like, ask me.
  • If you see art on my art site (susancprice.com) and want it on an item, ask me.
  • If you, or anyone you know, actually writes thank you and other notes, I can get notecards a bit cheaper; ask me.
  • If you need it delivered by the end of December, I suggest you order before the end of Thanksgiving week.

  1. As will Susan, I hope to leave some creative works behind. Not too soon though for either of us...

    1. To my eye, you are being too modest. You do good work. It would be a pity if it all were lost.

  3. Susan we had to face the problem of what to do with a life time of stuff before we moved to Costa Rica. We took more than we should, but even so there was a ton of things to rid ourselves of. They were memories of our life, but they held value to only us. We approached it by asking one question. "If I die tonight will this mean anything to someone tomorrow?" If not it went in the bag for Goodwill or the garbage. The hardest thing was filling that first bag.
