Ask Wednesday: What else did you see or do at Neubeuern besides visit the millstone quarry?

Hardly enough

By Morris Dean

[Sequel to "What of great interest didn't you report from Bavaria?," October 1]

When we went to Rosenheim, a few miles southeast of Munich, to visit Rolf & Susan Dumke, we had never heard of the little town of Neubeuern. And I don't think we ever would have except that the millstone quarry was near there. Rolf & Susan took us into the town's historic district, which we entered through one of the district's old city gates before parking in the town square, very near the parish Church of the Immaculate Conception:

On the other side of the square, atop a steep hill, was the town's historic Schloss, or castle, which today houses a boarding school "of excellent reputation with an international clientele," according to the web page "Neubeuern Things to Do," which I recommend for a virtual tour guided by someone who saw a lot more than we did the day we were there. (It has photos of the gates, the church, the Schloss, the marketplace, etc.) But I did take my own picture of the Schloss:
[You can find many more pictures in the German-language brochure, "„Grüß Gott“ in Neubeuern."]

Next we drove out into the surrounding country to the top of a hill from which Rolf and Susan showed us more of the surrounding countryside, some of which Rolf was familiar with from very early years in Bavaria following World War II, before his family emigrated to the United States as refugees. Rolf & Susan are American citizens, but have lived in Bavaria for several decades now. Two photos from the top of the hill:
