Goines On: The hoot of an owl

Goines was emptying the dishwasher when he heard what sounded like an owl hooting, and he wondered what the owl was saying, what he might be alerting other owls to or warning them about.
And he remembered those references in novels and movies to what omen an owl’s hoot might signify. They were all about what the hoot might mean to the humans in the story, and never mind the owl, what it was experiencing, what it meant to communicate to its own kind. If it were anything to do with humans, it could only be, “Beware.”
