Two Is Enough:
A painting for a friend in Australia

Detail of “Benny”
A dog named Benny

Painting by Shirley Deane/Midyett

Text by Vic Midyett

When Shirley visited Australia last year, she stayed for a few days with her friend Dr. Adele Thomas and Adeles husband Ely Lazar, a chiropractor, some of whose “Lifestyle Tips for Over 50s” columns on their “Passionate Retirees” website have been republished on Moristotle & Co.
Adele had just gotten her new pride and joy, Benny, a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel puppy, who will grow into a mid-sized adult dog. Benny was Shirley’s constant companion when Adele was working, even sometimes sleeping with Shirley.
Shirley painted a portrait of Benny and mailed it to Adele, even though she and Ely are coming in May to visit us in Tahlequah. Shirley is like me: of all the things we’ve lost, we miss our friends next-most after losing our minds. (We are so forgetful, we don’t know if we found a rope or lost a horse.)
Anyway, Shirley and I are pleased to be able to share a photo of her painting of Benny with you here today. We hope we never forget you!

  1. Benny is so sweet-looking! Is he really that sweet, and Shirley didn’t extra-sweeten him?
