Still a fun trip
By Michael Hanson
On July 17, 2017, my elegy book for teacher, poet, novelist James Dickey, Tripping To Dickeyland, was published, and I spent the next few months basking in the delicious luxury of being a writer who, 30 years subsequent to finishing his first novel, finally had readers....
At least a few of them.
And, as if there were no limit to the luxuries I would enjoy, doing readings and signings – such as the one Moristotle announced here on September 9, 2018, “Michael Hanson will be at Flyleaf Books this week” – was like a miracle, an absolute gas.
Also I dug appearing for a Local Author’s Day in the Mebane Public Library, which none other than Moristotle himself had suggested and facilitated, generous spirit that he is. (The only thing better than having a lot of readers is getting to meet some of them.)
Finally, sitting at a microphone for a frightening number of hours to record an audiobook of myself reading Tripping To Dickeyland might have been murderously difficult (oi!) but I’m grateful to have had the opportunity, to say nothing of the luxury of having listeners such as Moristotle, who subsequently took the time to pen a review of that little book: “Book Review: Tripping to Dickeyland,” published here on March 4, 2018.

I have the book and enjoyed reading it very much.
ReplyDeleteWow! Seems like a lifetime ago . . .
ReplyDeleteDid you hear about Dickey's son Christopher? We just exchanged emails in April. “ Christopher Dickey, Renowned Foreign Correspondent, Dies at 68”
Thanks for the post!
Christopher was a pretty amazing guy – it runs in the family. He's responsible for getting me the cover photo for Tripping To Dickeyland, and just three months ago gave me permission to quote a Dickey poem in my soon-to-be-published novel.
DeleteI think his death was very sudden and unexpected.
